Minimally invasive foot surgery
Minimally invasive foot surgery
Saturday, 15 September 2012
Minimally invasive foot surgery is a special technique to treat certain foot conditions though stab incisions. The bone cuts themselves are the same as with “traditional” open surgery and so are the indications. Conditions that can be treated with minimally invasive surgery are:
-bunions (Hallux valgus) - Chevron and Akin osteotomies;
-stiff toes (Hallux rigidus or limitus) - dorsal cheilectomy;
-flat foot with tibialis posterior insufficiency - calcaneal osteotomy.
The advantage of this technique is the reduced morbidity (infection, swelling, stiffness) due to the minimal soft tissue damage. This is an obviously advantage in the recovery of any patient undergoing foot surgery, but particularly beneficial in those who have a higher risk of complications.
This is a relatively new technique, that has been popular in Europe, especially UK, France and Italy, but up-and-coming in Australia and New Zealand.
